The last time I used serial to "program" something was in 2009 to update the firmware on a B&R PP100 so it could be a terminal panel without using a CF card. The instead switched to CAN, which was really frustrating, but whatever. I only had to do that because they were rolling their own MBRTU stack and I was helping them debug it it while trying to convince them to switch to TCP. The last time I used a serial cable was to tap into an old RS485 network to diagnose a ModbusRTU sensor with RealTerm in about 2013.
